The Great Migration
The Serengeti, the camps, and the great animal migration
The annual migration of over 2 million animals in the Serengeti ecosystem is one of the world's most famous and best-documented natural wonders.
The unique combination of Serengeti Pioneer Camp and the award-winning Serengeti Migration Camp, the latter located on the Grumeti River in the north of the national park, guarantees exemplary and unrestricted access to the annual Serengeti migration and thus exceptional wildlife viewing throughout the year.
As shown on the "migration map," over 90% of Serengeti National Park can be covered from one of our two camps. Our two camps communicate with each other, so our groups always have direct and quick access to the migration.
THE MONTHLY MIGRATORY PATTERNS:
Due to varying weather conditions and other such factors, migration may differ in its location at any given time of year. However, a general prediction for the migration pattern from month to month can be summarized as follows:
- In January, herds of wildebeests can be found on the short grass plains of southern Serengeti.
- In February, migration spread across the short grass plains of southern Serengeti.
- In March, the migration spreads to the southern nature reserves of Serengeti, Loliondo, and Ngorongoro.
- In April, the migrating herds move north through the Moru Kopjes and Seronera areas.
- In May, the migration heads north through Seronera toward the western corridor.
- In June, the migration gathers in the western corridor before crossing the Grumeti River.
- In July, the migration continues across the Grumeti River and the Grumeti Reserve.
- In August, the migration continues to the far northwest of Serengeti National Park.
- In September, herds of wildebeest in the north of Serengeti National Park and in the Maasai Mara.
- In October, wildebeests graze in the far north of the Serengeti—and across the way in the Mara.
- In November, the migration begins its first journey south through Loliondo and across the eastern ends of Serengeti National Park.
- In December, the migration arrives just in time for the rains in the short grass plains.
