In the footsteps of pioneers, Inuit, and wildlife

from Reykjavik, Iceland

to St. John's, Newfoundland

14 days (13 nights)

MS Ocean Explorer | MS Ultramarine
Polar expedition (14 days/13 nights) along the legendary Northwest Passage from Reykjavik, embarkation at Kangerlussuaq (Greenland) along Baffin Island to St. John's/Newfoundland
+++Up to 20% discount +++ Limited offer +++
This 14-day route is a journey that connects Greenland, the Canadian High Arctic, and the east coast of Canada. You will experience two very different natural worlds: the barren, treeless Arctic with polar bears, seals, and mosses—and the boreal zone with coniferous forests, caribou, foxes, and peregrine falcons.
The expedition begins with a charter flight from Reykjavík to Kangerlussuaq (western Greenland) and continues via the Davis Strait to Nunavut, then along Labrador to St. John's, Newfoundland. Along the way, you will discover Greenlandic, Inuit, and Nunatsiavut culture as well as Nordic history in L'Anse aux Meadows—complemented by the Celtic-influenced hospitality of Canada's east coast.
You will visit three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Ilulissat Icefjord in Greenland with its active glaciers, the Basque whaling station Red Bay in Labrador, and the 11th-century Viking settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows.
From Greenland to Newfoundland: mountains, wildlife, and Viking history—this route offers one of the most diverse experiences between the Arctic and the Atlantic.

itinerary
A journey to places steeped in ancient cultures and history
Day 1 | Individual arrival in Reykjavik, Iceland
From Reykjavik International Airport, you will be transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is yours to explore the Icelandic capital at your leisure.
Day 2 | Flight to Kangalussuaq (Greenland) & Embarkation
In the morning, you will fly to Kangalussuaq, where you will board your expedition ship and begin your journey. Look forward to the start of a great adventure. On board, you will be welcomed by the expedition leader and receive a detailed safety briefing.
Day 3 | Discover the natural surroundings of Sisimiut and Maniitsoq – with fjords, mountains, and glaciers
Today, you will explore two places in the municipality of Qeqqata on the west coast of Greenland, along the Davis Strait. The first stop is Maniitsoq, which translates as "place of rugged terrain" – an apt description of the surroundings: steep mountains, untouched rivers, mighty glacier landscapes, and deeply indented fjords characterize the landscape. A special highlight is the trip through the approximately 75-kilometer-long Eternity Fjord, which reaches depths of up to 1,200 meters in places.
In the afternoon, you will visit Sisimiut, Greenland's second largest city. Here, well-preserved colonial buildings from the 18th century invite you to take a stroll through history – including the striking Bethel Church and a striking blue and red wooden church.
Today's program also includes an introduction to traditional kayak building, an important element of Greenlandic culture. The kayak, which has been used by the Inuit for over 4,000 years as a means of hunting and transportation, is considered a cultural symbol of Greenland. Those who prefer a more athletic activity can explore the surroundings of Sisimiut by mountain bike.
Day 4 | Ilulissat – Experience icebergs up close
Ilulissat – meaning "icebergs" in Greenlandic – is one of the most impressive stops on any trip along Greenland's west coast. The nearby Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, is the source of countless icebergs. This is where the Sermeq Kujalleq (also known as the Jakobshavn Glacier), one of the most active glaciers in the northern hemisphere, calves.
A Zodiac excursion offers a unique opportunity to experience the impressive interplay of ice and water up close as gigantic icebergs drift toward Disko Bay. Afterwards, a landing is planned in the town of Ilulissat, followed by a hike to the ice fjord—a spectacular vantage point for observing the wandering ice giants from the rocky shore.
In Ilulissat itself, you will encounter many sled dogs, which were once more numerous than the town's inhabitants. Ilulissat is also the birthplace of polar explorer Knud Rasmussen, who was the first European to cross the Northwest Passage by dog sled. If you have enough time, you can visit the local museum dedicated to his life and work.
Day 5 | At sea – Through the Davis Strait
As your ship passes through the Davis Strait, you will gain fascinating insights from expert lectures given by our polar experts on board. Topics range from glaciology and history to the wildlife of the Arctic. The team includes glaciologists, historians, biologists, and other specialists with extensive experience in the polar region.
Day 6 | Pangnirtung: Stronghold of Inuit culture
Today, our exploration of the Canadian Arctic begins with our arrival in Nunavut, Canada's youngest territory. The name "Nunavut" means "our land" in the Inuktitut language. The territory covers more than 1.8 million square kilometers north of the Arctic Circle and is home to many Inuit communities.
One planned stop is Pangnirtung, a settlement at the entrance to Pangnirtung Fjord, which flows into Cumberland Sound. The community is considered the cultural center of the Inuit and offers an excellent opportunity to learn more about their way of life and traditions. Pangnirtung is particularly well known for its high-quality textile art and handmade artwork. A popular souvenir is the "Pang-Toque, " a distinctive knitted hat that is almost a must-have item when visiting the region.
Day 7 | Cape Mercy: A fascinating history lesson
Cape Mercy is a particularly worthwhile destination for travelers interested in history. The remote bay is located at the southern tip of Cumberland Sound in Nunavut and was named in 1585 by British explorer John Davis, who crossed this part of the Arctic during one of his voyages.
In the 1950s, Cape Mercy was selected as the site for a DEW Line station (Distant Early Warning Line) – a network of radar stations set up during the Cold War for the early detection of possible nuclear attacks.
Long before the arrival of European explorers, however, Inuit communities were already living and hunting in this region, using the area around Cape Mercy for fishing and other traditional activities.
A guided walk along the coast not only provides insights into this complex history, but also offers impressive views of Davis Strait, which connects Baffin Bay with the Labrador Sea.
Days 8+9 | Torngat Mountains National Park: Exploring the boreal wilderness
Established in 2008, Torngat Mountains National Park in northern Labrador covers 10,000 km² and includes the highest mountains east of the Rocky Mountains. The landscape is impressive, with glaciers, fjords, boreal forests, and Arctic wildlife.
The park is located in the autonomous Inuit territory of Nunatsiavut, which was recognized as the homeland of the Labrador Inuit in 2005. The region has been inhabited for over 7,500 years and is of great cultural and spiritual significance. "Torngat" means "place of spirits" in Inuktitut.
You can experience this unique wilderness up close on zodiac or kayak tours and guided hikes.
Day 10 | Nain, Nunatsiavut: Home of the Labrador Inuit
Nain, with a population of around 1,200, is the administrative capital of Nunatsiavut, the semi-autonomous Inuit region in northern Labrador. At the modern Illusuak Cultural Center, visitors can learn more about the heritage of the Inuit in Labrador through interactive exhibits, artwork, and cultural programs.
To learn more about the cultural influences of the region, take a walk through the town to the historic Moravian Mission complex, which was founded in 1771. The whitewashed church and mission house bear witness to centuries of exchange between the Inuit and European missionaries.
You will have the opportunity to chat with locals, hear traditional stories, and sample typical foods such as char and cloudberries. A guided hike rounds off the visit with impressive views of the surrounding mountains and the sea.
Day 11 | At sea
Enjoy the view of the south coast of Baffin Island and Labrador as our ship heads south. Join the expedition team on deck to look out for whales and birds. At the same time, you can relax with a glass of wine or a cup of tea and enjoy the impressive landscape.
Day 13 | L'Anse Aux Meadows National Historic Site and the history of the Norse and Vikings
Think of the wooden longboats that the Vikings used to travel around 2,180 kilometers from Greenland to Newfoundland in the year 1000 AD. Today, you can visit the archaeological remains at the site where they landed with their handcrafted ships. L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the only confirmed Norse Viking settlement in North America.
On a guided tour, you will learn more about the history of Leif Erikson, son of Erik the Red, who founded the area known as "Vinland" around 1000 AD – today's Newfoundland on the east coast. Explore the reconstructed earthen huts and Norse ruins that prove that the Vikings discovered North America about 500 years before Christopher Columbus.
Day 13 | At sea
On your last day at sea, you will have the opportunity to ask our team of experts any questions you may have, attend a final polar presentation, and relax in the Tundra Spa & Sauna or in one of the outdoor hot tubs.
Day 14 | St. John's & Return Journey
Your ship arrives at the pier in St. John's in the morning. After breakfast, you can head to St. John's Airport to begin your journey home, or simply stay a little longer to soak up the last impressions of Newfoundland's colorful capital city.
The daily programs described here are for your guidance. The itinerary may vary considerably due to local ice and weather conditions, last-minute permit procedures, and local authorities, but also to respond to current conditions regarding wildlife viewing.Theexpedition leader on board will determine the final itinerary and daily program. Flexibility is of utmost importance during our expedition-style voyages.
activities
FLIGHTSEEING (INCLUDED)
The polar landscape reveals its full beauty from the air. Sightseeing flights last 10 to 15 minutes and are conducted in groups of 7 to 9 people. Additional helicopter activities can be booked on board. Please note that all helicopter operations are subject to weather and logistical conditions.
POLAR PLUNGE (INCLUDED)
The Polar Plunge is only for the brave. You dive into the ice-cold polar waters from a dinghy or the gangway, cheered on by your fellow travelers and the expedition team – and, of course, well secured. The Polar Plunge takes place once per trip, with the expedition leader and captain choosing the optimal time and location while constantly monitoring the conditions.
Your safety is our top priority – the ship's doctor is always present during the Polar Plunge, and additional lifeguards in inflatable boats are nearby when you jump into the water.
ZODIAC TRIPS (INCLUDED)
The Zodiacs will take you ashore, closer to icebergs, whales, and seabirds, or transport your luggage. During the expedition, you will visit remote locations that are only accessible by Zodiac.
These large, sturdy inflatable boats are extremely safe and have been specially designed for expeditions. They are the workhorses of polar expeditions. Separate air chambers ensure that these sturdy boats still have sufficient buoyancy even if they suffer minor damage. Thanks to their flat bottoms, the boats can land directly on the asphalt and ice-covered beaches that you will encounter on your polar expedition.
GUIDED HIKES (INCLUDED)
When you go ashore in the polar regions, you are no longer a distant observer, but right in the middle of it all. Organized hikes range from short trips to viewpoints to longer marches of several kilometers across ice, rock, and snow. Hiking excursions can last two to three hours and offer plenty of time for photography, learning, or simply marveling at the surroundings. No experience is necessary, but participants should be able to climb into a rubber dinghy and walk on uneven terrain.
PADDLE EXCURSIONS (ADDITIONAL CHARGE)
Find your balance on sit-on-top paddles for two people. Cost: 190 euros per person.
KAYAK TRIPS (ADDITIONAL CHARGE)
Discover the polar regions from a unique perspective by kayak and experience nature up close. If conditions and logistics allow, your kayak guide will try to let you paddle as often as possible during the trip. Sea kayakers are usually taken by Zodiac from the ship to an ideal starting point where the kayak tour begins. At the end of the kayaking tour, guests return to the ship by Zodiac.
MOUNTAIN BIKING (ADDITIONAL CHARGE)
Fancy a more active adventure? The team has teamed up with local partners to develop exceptional mountain bike routes through the breathtaking landscape just outside the town limits of Sisimiut in Greenland. While others explore the community, experienced guides and local partners will take you to the best terrain to start your adventure and accompany you throughout the activity.
Participants must be physically fit and have intermediate to advanced mountain biking experience. The routes consist of a combination of single trails and remote gravel roads. Riders should be able to roll over small obstacles (such as roots or rocks) and shift gears safely to adjust and respond to changing terrain.
TUNDRA TO TABLE: CULINARY EXPERIENCE (ADDITIONAL CHARGE)
This unique adventure into the culinary traditions of the Inuit in Greenland and Nunavut is led by Inuit chefs who are experts in indigenous cuisine.Tundra to Tablewas developed in partnership with Igapall, a non-profit Inuit organization dedicated to food and culture.
Guests enjoy a four-course menu of modern Inuit fusion cuisine while the chefs talk about the origins of the dishes and the elements of Inuit culinary art. The dinner, which uses regional tableware, also includes cultural storytelling.
