Pearls of the Mekong during the high water season
During the flood season, the Mekong and its tributaries carry significantly more water. Rice fields, floodplains, and forests glow in rich green, and nature shows itself from its most vibrant side, which naturally delights passionate photographers in particular. Many smaller canals and remote regions that are inaccessible during the dry season can now be reached by boat. This opens up extraordinary opportunities: floating villages, flooded forests, and hidden temple sites can be explored on kayaking tours or excursions in small boats. Thanks to the higher water level, particularly flexible navigation —and thus additional stops—are also possible.
We offer this boat expedition on the Mekong River between Ho Chi Minh City and Siem Reap during the high water season, both upstream and downstream. On the Siem Reap–Ho Chi Minh City route, you will follow largely the same daily program in reverse order, with only a few differences.

Note: We offer this trip on the Mekong in two directions. Below, we present the trip upstream from Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap day by day. The boat expedition downstream from Siem Reap to Ho Chi Minh City follows exactly the same route in reverse, with only slight differences in the itinerary. Upon request, we will be happy to send you the detailed itinerary for Siem Reap – Ho Chi Minh City.
Day 1: From Ho Chi Minh City to embarkation in My Tho (Vietnam)
From the meeting point in Ho Chi Minh City, the trip begins with a transfer in an air-conditioned van to the pier in My Tho.
The Aqua Mekong will be waiting for you there. Settle into your floating retreat for the next 8 days and get to know your fellow travelers.
Day 2: Binh Thanh/Sa Dec & My An Hung (Vietnam)
Start your day in the weaving village of Binh Thanh and explore local markets, fruit orchards, and fish farms by bike. Alternatively, take it easy and visit Sa Dec, where you can discover the lively markets with your chef and visit the Lover House and Kien An Cung.
In the afternoon, visit the typical Mekong Delta village of My An Hung, where you can stroll through lush plantations. The locals invite you to taste local fruits and listen to traditional folk singers. You can also look forward to a performance of the unique unicorn dance. If you prefer to spend your time on land actively, there is the option of going on a 17-kilometer bike tour.
Day 3: Chau Doc, Vinh Xuong, and Ka’Om Samnor Border
Take a dinghy ride along the Bassac Canal to the lively border town of Chau Doc. There, take a ride on a xe loi, a traditional rickshaw taxi, through the town and local market. Then, take a van to Long Son Pagoda, where you can enjoy panoramic views from Sam Mountain. Learn more about centuries-old Mahayana Buddhist practices from the monks. On the way back, visit the bustling morning market.
For active travelers, there is the option of an 18-kilometer bike tour on Long Khanh Island through rice fields and local everyday life. After lunch, you can relax by the pool, try a traditional Khmer massage, or learn how to authentically prepare dishes from the Mekong region while crossing the border into Cambodia.
Day 4: Koh Okhna Tey –& Preah Prosop (Cambodia)
Today, you can watch skilled Khmer artisans dyeing and weaving kroma. This ubiquitous fabric is an integral part of everyday life for the Khmer people. If you like, you can also explore the riverside landscape by bike, cycling past Buddhist temples and thatched houses built on slender wooden stilts, while white oxen wade in the shallow water beside you.
After lunch, you will board the dinghies again and head for the tamarind trees of Preah Prosop. Discover a remote village that has hardly changed over many generations.
Day 5: Phnom Penh (Cambodia)
Experience Cambodia's capital city on a motorized tuk-tuk ride and explore cultural highlights such as the Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda. If you wish, you can visit the Tuol Sleng Museum ( once a Khmer Rouge torture prison) or the National Museum of Cambodia, which houses the world's largest collection of Khmer art. Or simply stroll through the Russian Market at your leisure.
Back on board, round off the day with sundowner cocktails such as the "Salted Watermelon Crush" with Thai basil. You will also experience a tradition that is immortalized on the temple walls of Angkor Wat with a performance by Khmer Apsara dancers.
Day 6: Tonle Sap River, Koh Chen & Kampong Chhnang (Cambodia)
In the morning, visit the silversmith village of Koh Chen, renowned for its fine craftsmanship. This is where the famous silver bowls are made, which are regularly chosen by the King of Cambodia as gifts for state guests.
In the afternoon, you will gain even deeper insights into life on the river in Kampong Chhnang. The history of the "port of ceramics," which owes its name to archaeological finds, dates back to the 6th century. A bicycle tour is available here as an option.
Day 7: Tonle Sap Lake, Chhnok Tru & Moat Khla (Cambodia)
Today, continue exploring the remote communities around Tonle Sap Lake, which was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1997. In Chhnok Tru, visit Phat Sandai, a remote village with floating houses along the water channels. Learn from locals what life is like in a Tonle Sap community where schools, churches, pagodas, and even karaoke bars and police stations float on the water.
For an even more intense experience, paddle your kayak past the floating houses —often under the shady canopy of the water trees. After lunch, visit the floating village of Moat Khla, which can only be reached by water. There you will take part in a Buddhist blessing ceremony.
Day 8: Tonle Sap Lake, Prek Toal & Siem Reap (Cambodia)
Early in the morning on the last day of your Mekong River expedition, you will take a dinghy to the 22,000-hectare Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary. As one of Asia's largest freshwater wetlands, Prek Toal is a last refuge in Southeast Asia for large water birds such as the gray pelican, the white-winged stork, the black-headed ibis, and the rare masked water rail.
During the boat trip, your thoughts will surely wander back to the cultural experiences and scenic landscapes of Indochina that you have explored extensively over the past few days.
After this final excursion into Cambodia's natural surroundings, it's time to say goodbye to the Aqua Mekong, your fellow travelers, and your attentive crew in Siem Reap.
