The Amazon River originates at the confluence of the Ucayali and Marañón rivers, in the middle of one of the most untouched and pristine areas of the rainforest. The narrow waterways allow almost continuous visual contact with the banks, providing ideal conditions for spotting animals in the wild, often high up in the treetops. The expedition takes place during the dry season (low water season) aboard the Aria Amazon, a stylish and modern expedition ship specially designed for voyages through the biodiverse Pacaya-Samiria Reserve in the Peruvian Amazon. The ship offers 16 comfortable suites and spacious communal areas, including a panoramic deck, an outdoor hot tub, and a fitness area.
Ship expedition on the Amazon during the low water season
The dry season from July to November – known as the low water season – offers particularly many opportunities for shore excursions. The lower water level allows access to secluded lagoons and tributaries that are inaccessible during high water. Whether by boat or on foot, this is the time to experience the rainforest most intensely. The wildlife concentrates around the remaining waterholes, providing the best opportunities for wildlife viewing. The paths in the forest are drier and easier to walk on, making hiking more pleasant. In addition, the clear light of the dry season offers ideal conditions for nature photographers, while the climate is less humid and generally more pleasant than in the rainy season.
Note: The Amazon expedition during the low water season can be booked for a duration of 8 or 5 days. For the shorter version, you will board on day 4 of the itinerary below. While the 8-day trip covers both the Amazon and the Ucayali River, the shorter route focuses primarily on the Marañón River.

Your arrival and departure from/to Iquitos are not included in your tour price.
Since our customers all have individual wishes for their trip, we are happy to book flights separately. Of course, the flights then become part of a secure package tour. We recommend an overnight stay in Iquitos to cushion any irregularities with your flight or lost luggage. We are happy to organize everything for you on request. Please contact us.
Note: If you choose the 5-day trip, you will board the Aria Amazon in Nauta Town on day 4 of the itinerary. In this case, your trip will also begin in Iquitos with a warm welcome at the airport. After transferring to the city center, you will take a city tour and enjoy lunch. Later, you will drive to Nauta, where you will board the ship at around 5:30 p.m.
Day 1: Transfer from Iquitos to Nauta & embarkation
Upon arrival on a midday flight at Iquitos International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your crew. A private transfer will then take you to the heart of Iquitos, where you can get your first impressions of the city on a panoramic tour. Afterwards, a welcome lunch awaits you at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, you will continue on to the port of Nauta. At around 5:30 p.m., you will board your ship and settle into your comfortable suite. The anticipation of the experiences and encounters that await you in Peru's fascinating Amazon region is growing.
Before the evening program begins, you will receive an introduction from the natural history guide team and a safety briefing. Round off your first evening with dinner in the on-board restaurant, featuring Amazonian delicacies created by Pedro Miguel Schiaffino, culinary advisor to Aria Amazon and one of Peru's most renowned chefs.
Day 2: Clavero Lake, Ucayali River, and Yarapa River
You begin the day with an exciting exploration tour along the Ucayali River in search of wildlife, including parrots, herons, birds of prey, and various species of monkeys.
After breakfast, you have a choice: try your hand at fishing for the notorious piranhas, paddle a canoe or kayak across the dark Clavero Lake, take a refreshing dip, or visit a traditional Amazonian village where you can meet the river dwellers, known as ribereños.
After dinner, a leisurely stroll through the seasonally flooded rainforest of San José de Paranapura is an inviting way to end the day.
Day 3: Amazon, Tahuayo River, and San Pedro Forest
After breakfast, an exploration tour along the Tahuayo River is on the agenda. While traveling by dinghy on the blackwater tributary of the Amazon, you will hear exciting stories and interesting facts about life in the rainforest from your nature guides.
After lunch, you will go on a hike through the jungle near San Pedro or Puerto Prado. This will give you the opportunity to learn more about the diverse flora and fauna of the Amazon region.
As the day draws to a close, we head back out onto the Amazon in dinghies – this time in search of the mysterious nocturnal inhabitants of the rainforest, such as caimans.
Day 4: Nauta Town, visit to a rainforest village & source of the Amazon
The day begins with a guided walk through the lively market in Nauta. Here you will find a wealth of regional products from the Peruvian rainforest – from exotic fruits and fresh herbs to fragrant spices. If you feel like it, you can also try some of the special local delicacies.
After breakfast, you will visit local artisans who will introduce you to the traditional technique of weaving with palm fibers. This ancient craft is deeply rooted in Amazonian culture and is still practiced with great dedication today.
In the afternoon, your journey takes you to the municipality of San Francisco. There, a local beekeeper will give you fascinating insights into ecological honey production in the region. Afterwards, you will continue by small boat to a special highlight: the confluence of the Marañón and Ucayali rivers, where the mighty Amazon River has its source.
After dark, the crew welcomes new guests who are now joining the 5-day expedition. Together, you continue your journey downstream on the Marañón River.
Day 5: Marañon River & Yanayacu Pucate River
Early in the morning, you will set off on a birdwatching tour along the Marañón River. This is the perfect opportunity to experience the wildlife in the peaceful morning hours.
After breakfast, explore the mysterious black water trails of the Yanayacu-Pucate River. With a little luck , you may spot sloths, great egrets, parrots, or the rare Terekay turtles.
Afterwards, you will visit a village in the Amazon region, where you will be shown how the nutritious aguaje palm is traditionally harvested. This will give you an insight into the daily life of the rainforest inhabitants.
In the afternoon, take a fishing trip in the dinghies in search of the legendary piranhas.
The day ends with a nighttime trip on the Yanayaquillo River. Surrounded by the silence of the jungle, you can look out for nocturnal animals under a clear starry sky.
Day 6: Samiria River & Pacaya Samiria National Reserve
Today you start early and soon recharge your batteries with a picnic in the shade of the Amazon rainforest, accompanied by the polyphonic concert of nature.
Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to go fishing in the dark waters of the Samiria River. Then you can choose from a range of activities: take a hike through the jungle, explore the area by canoe or kayak, or enjoy a refreshing swim in the middle of the impressive Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve.
At the end of the day, glide leisurely down the Ucayali River and watch the sun set over the rainforest.
Day 7: Puerto Prado Forest & Amazon
After breakfast, take a dinghy trip on the Marañón River. Have your binoculars ready and, with a little luck, you will spot sloths and a variety of exotic bird species along the banks of this impressive river.
In the afternoon, you will continue your journey downstream towards Puerto Prado, an indigenous village in the heart of the Amazon region. There you will have the opportunity to admire impressive giant water lilies up close – an uplifting sight in the midst of the tropical landscape.
Day 8: Nauta Town, Manatee Rescue Center & Transfer to the airport
On the last morning of your trip, a guide will accompany you on a tour of the local market. Here you can immerse yourself one last time in the lively everyday life and discover the diversity of regional products from the Peruvian Amazon region.
Back on board the Aria Amazon, enjoy a hearty breakfast before saying goodbye to the crew and preparing to disembark.
On the way to the airport, you can look forward to a very special stop: at the Manatee Rescue Center, you can gain insight into the loving care and preparation of orphaned Amazonian manatees for their return to the wild.
You will continue your journey with unforgettable memories of impressive animal encounters, warm encounters with the local population, and a deep understanding of the importance of the Amazon rainforest.
