Not only is the enormous biodiversity fascinating, but also the sheer size of this ecosystem. Even today, scientists regularly discover new species, while countless others are believed to remain hidden. The Amazon spans nine countries in South America, but the most intense and impressive experience is a river cruise in Peru. Where the Ucayali and Marañón rivers converge, the Amazon is born – one of the most pristine rainforest regions. As you glide along the narrow waterways, the banks remain in view, offering numerous opportunities to spot wildlife high up in the treetops. In addition, two guided excursions with expert nature guides await you every day, where you can observe rare and endemic species such as pink river dolphins, spider monkeys, caimans, sloths, and anacondas.

Exploring the Amazon region during the low water season
During the low water season (July to November), there are many opportunities for discoveries on land: the lower water level allows access to remote tributaries and lagoons that are otherwise difficult to reach and hidden during the high water season. This allows you to explore the rainforest up close with smaller boats and on hikes. The flora and fauna are concentrated at the remaining waterholes, increasing the chances of observing rare animals such as river dolphins, caimans, and birds. The paths in the forest are dry and more accessible, making walks and nature observation much more enjoyable. The light in the dry season is clear and offers particularly good conditions for nature photographers, while the climate is pleasant and less humid than in the high water season.
Note: We offer river expeditions in the Amazon region during the low water season with a duration of 8 or 5 days. For the 5-day trip, you will board the ship on day 4 of the itinerary below. While the 8-day trip takes you first to the Amazon and then to the Ucayali River, the Aqua Nera mainly sails on the Marañon River during the shorter trip .

Advance information
Your arrival and departure from/to Iquitos are not included in your tour price.
Since our customers all have individual wishes for their trip, we are happy to book flights separately. Of course, the flights then become part of a secure package tour. We recommend an overnight stay in Iquitos to cushion any irregularities with your flight or lost luggage. We are happy to organize everything for you on request. Please contact us.
If you book the 5-day trip, you will also board the Aqua Nera in Nauta Town – but only on day 4 of the itinerary below. In this case, your trip will also begin in Iquitos, where you will receive a warm welcome at the airport. After the transfer to the city center, you will take part in a city tour and enjoy lunch. Later, you will drive to Nauta, where embarkation will take place at around 5:30 p.m.
Day 1: Embarkation in Iquitos & Marañón River
At lunchtime, you will be warmly welcomed by your tour guides at Iquitos International Airport. You will then enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before transferring from Iquitos to Nauta, where embarkation is scheduled for around 5:30 p.m.
Make yourself comfortable in your spacious suite and enjoy the anticipation of the days ahead on and around the Amazon. After an introduction by your nature guides and a mandatory safety briefing, gather in the restaurant for your first culinary experience of Amazonian cuisine —created by Aqua Nova's renowned chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino.
Day 2: Amazon & Tahuayo River
Set off at sunrise for bird watching along the Amazon River. After breakfast, take a dinghy trip from the Amazon to one of its tributaries, the Tahuayo. Learn more about the region from your experienced nature guides and try your luck at fishing for the infamous piranhas. At dusk, it's time for another excursion. The search for nocturnal animals is followed by atmospheric stargazing.
Day 3: Clavero Lake & Ucayali River
Experience the impressive black waters of Clavero Lake today and visit the remote communities that live on its shores. Go on a kayak or canoe trip or enjoy a refreshing swim before returning to the boat for a delicious lunch.
In the afternoon, enjoy a short jungle walk in the forest of San José de Paranapura, where you can admire the famous giant water lilies.
Day 4: Nauta Town, visit to a rainforest village & source of the Amazon
In the morning, visit the local market with a guide and marvel at the variety of regional products from the Peruvian Amazon region. If you like, you can also try some exotic snacks. After breakfast, visit a group of Amazonian craftswomen and learn about the traditional technique of palm fiber weaving, which has been practiced for generations in the Peruvian rainforest.
In the afternoon, you will visit a beekeeper in the municipality of San Francisco before setting off in dinghies to one of the great natural spectacles of the southern hemisphere: the source of the Amazon River. In the evening, you will meet the new guests who are joining you for the 5-day voyage.
Day 5: Marañon River & Yanayacu Pucate River
Start the day with morning bird watching along the Marañón River, followed by a hearty jungle breakfast. Afterwards, visit a village in the Amazon region, where you will gain insights into the life of the Ribereños—the local river communities—and witness the harvesting of aguaje palms up close.
Later, you will have the opportunity to swim in the Yanayacu-Pucate River or go on a kayak or canoe tour. With a little luck, you may spot the famous pink river dolphins. Afterwards, a leisurely bike ride along the banks of the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve awaits you.
After lunch, if you are interested, you can participate in a special ceremony with a healer from the indigenous Kukama-Kukamiria people, who will introduce you to the spiritual relationship between humans and nature.
In the evening, after dinner under a spectacular starry sky, you will once again take the dinghy out onto the Yanayaquillo River to keep an eye out for nocturnal animals .
Day 6: Samiria River & Pacaya Samiria National Reserve
The early start to the day pays off: a varied full-day excursion awaits – including a picnic lunch in the middle of nature, surrounded by the mysterious sounds of the rainforest. During the excursion, you will have the opportunity to fish in the dark waters of the Samiria River, go canoeing or kayaking, swim in the river, or explore the jungle in the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve on a guided hike.
On the way back to the Marañón River, you can once again make yourself comfortable in the cozy dinghies. Here, you have an excellent chance of observing rare pink river dolphins in their natural habitat.
Day 7: Puerto Prado & Amazon
Start the day with a morning wildlife viewing trip along the Pahuachiro River. After breakfast, visit the village of Puerto Prado, where you will have the opportunity to cycle along the riverbank to the village of Santa Cruz. Alternatively, you can visit an experienced beekeeper in the community of San Francisco.
In the afternoon, a boat trip to the majestic Amazon awaits you. Before dinner is served, you will also meet the wonderful crew who have worked behind the scenes to ensure that your stay on board the Aqua Nera has been so comfortable and enjoyable.
Day 8: Nauta Town, Manatee Rescue Center & Transfer to the airport
In the morning, you will have another opportunity to stroll through a colorful market with a guide and marvel one last time at the variety of exotic products from the Peruvian Amazon region.
You will then return to Aqua Nera for breakfast and to pack your bags. Before you finally say goodbye to the Amazon, there is one more moving visit on the agenda: the Manatee Rescue Center. This sanctuary cares for orphaned Amazonian manatees and prepares them for their return to the wild.
During the drive to the airport in Iquitos, your thoughts will surely wander back to the ship and the impressive river landscapes.
