The world's largest rainforest is home to one in ten of the Earth's animal and plant species. Not only is the Amazon's immense biodiversity overwhelming, but so is its sheer size. Even today, researchers regularly discover new animal and plant species in this vast ecosystem—and thousands more are probably still waiting to be found. The Amazon rainforest spans nine countries in South America, but the most impressive way to experience it is on a river cruise in Peru. Here, where the Ucayali and Marañón rivers converge, the Amazon is born – one of the most untouched regions of the entire rainforest. As you glide along narrow waterways, the banks are always within sight, offering the best opportunities to spot wildlife in the treetops. In addition, there are two guided excursions with experienced nature guides every day, during which you can observe rare and endemic animals such as pink river dolphins, spider monkeys, caimans, sloths, and anacondas.

During the high water season (December to May), this Amazon river safari offers very special advantages: the sharp rise in water levels allows you to penetrate deep into flooded rainforest areas that are inaccessible during the dry season. Your expedition boats glide directly between the treetops and the seemingly impenetrable jungle is within reach. In addition, animals such as monkeys, birds, and sloths can now be observed particularly well from the water, as they stay closer to the water's surface. The landscape is lush and green, the light is impressive, and despite the rainy season, the climate remains pleasantly tropical with mostly only short, heavy showers.
Note: We also offer this trip as a 5-day option. In this case, you will first board the Aqua Nera in Nauta Town, and your river expedition on the Amazon will begin with a drive from Iquitos to Nauta. In the itinerary below, you will therefore join the trip on day 4.

Your arrival and departure from/to Iquitos are not included in your tour price.
Since our customers all have individual wishes for their trip, we are happy to book flights separately. Of course, the flights then become part of a secure package tour. We recommend an overnight stay in Iquitos to cushion any irregularities with your flight or lost luggage. We are happy to organize everything for you on request. Please contact us.
If you book the 5-day trip, you will first board the Aqua Nera in Nauta Town (day 4 of the itinerary). In this case, your trip will also begin in Iquitos, where you will receive a warm welcome at the airport. After transferring to the city center, you will take part in a guided tour of the city and enjoy lunch. Later, you will travel to Nauta, where you will board the ship at around 5:30 p.m.
Day 1: Embarkation in Iquitos
At lunchtime, you will be warmly welcomed by your tour guides at Iquitos International Airport. You will then enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before boarding the Aqua Nera.
Settle into your spacious suite and look forward to a truly exciting river safari. After an introduction by your nature guides and a routine safety briefing, gather in the restaurant for the first of many culinary highlights created for you by Pedro Miguel Schiaffino, Aqua Nera's renowned consulting chef.
If you have already landed in Iquitos in the morning or have already spent a night there, other arrangements for the transfer from the airport to the port are also possible by arrangement.
Day 2: Yanayacu, Yacapana, Yarapa River, and Ucayali River
Today, you will travel by dinghy from the Amazon to the Yanayacu-Yacapana River. Have your binoculars ready to spot tropical songbirds, fish hawks, and sloths. Try your luck at fishing for the infamous Amazon piranhas while your nature guides share their extensive knowledge of the Amazon region with you.
In the afternoon, you will continue to the Yarapa River, a blackwater tributary of the Ucayali River. Here you can enjoy stargazing and an exciting excursion in search of nocturnal animals.
Day 3: Clavero Lake & Marañon River
Today you will start early and explore Lake Clavero aboard comfortable dinghies. In this region, the villagers use traditional dugout canoes as a means of transportation. You will have the opportunity to swim in the calm waters of the lake or visit the indigenous people of the Amazon region, who will welcome you with open arms into their community.
In the afternoon, the journey continues on the majestic Marañón River, where you will search for various animal species.
Day 4: Nauta Town, visit to a rainforest village & source of the Amazon
In the morning, take a guided tour of the colorful market in Nauta Town and marvel at the regional products of the Peruvian Amazon. If you like, you can also try some exotic snacks. After breakfast, visit a group of Amazonian artisans and learn about the traditional art of palm fiber weaving , which has been practiced for generations in the Peruvian Amazon.
In the afternoon, visit a beekeeper in the municipality of San Francisco before setting off again in the dinghies to experience one of the greatest natural spectacles in the southern hemisphere: the source of the Amazon River.
At dusk, you will welcome the new guests who are joining you for the five-day river cruise, and together you will continue your journey along the Marañón River.
Day 5: Marañon River & Yanayacu Pucate River
Greet the day with early bird watching on the Marañón River, followed by breakfast in the middle of the jungle. Afterwards, visit an Amazonian village where you can meet local ribereños (river dwellers) and witness the aguaje palm harvest.
Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to swim, kayak, or canoe in the Yanayacu-Pucate River. Keep an eye out for the legendary pink river dolphins. Afterwards, a bike tour along the riverbanks in the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve awaits you.
After lunch, if you wish, you can immerse yourself in your own spirituality under the guidance of a Kukama-Kukamiria healer who specializes in spiritual connection to nature.
At the end of the day, after dinner, you will once again take the dinghies out onto the Yanayaquillo River to stargaze and look for nocturnal animals.
Day 6: Samiria River
Today's early start will be richly rewarded: a full-day excursion with a picnic lunch awaits you, accompanied by the mysterious sounds of the jungle. You will also have the opportunity to fish in the dark waters of the Samiria River, as well as canoeing, kayaking, swimming, or taking a jungle walk in the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve.
On the way back to the Marañón River, you will once again board the comfortable dinghies—always on the lookout for the fascinating pink river dolphins.
Day 7: Nauta Caño River & Jungle Hike
At the start of the day, you will set off on a morning wildlife viewing tripto the extraordinary blackwater river Nauta Caño. If you wish, you can also take part in a bike tour from the village of Puerto Prado to the village of Santa Cruz along the riverbank.
In the afternoon, you will go on a jungle hike to look for flora and fauna, including medicinal trees, insects, and poison dart frogs. You will learn more about the different layers and ecosystems of the rainforest.
Before dinner, you will have the opportunity to meet your fantastic crew, who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make your time aboard the Aqua Nera an extraordinary experience.
Day 8: Arrival in Iquitos, Manatee Rescue Center & Transfer to the airport
In the morning, you will take a guided tour of the floating city of Belén to gain an insight into the everyday life of the people in the Peruvian Amazon. You will then return to the Aqua Nera and enjoy your last breakfast on board before disembarking.
On the way to the airport, you will visit the Manatee Rescue Center, where orphaned Amazonian manatees are cared for and prepared for their return to the wild.
On your journey home, you will not only have many unforgettable impressions in your luggage, but also the sounds of the jungle in your ears. If you would like to extend your stay in Peru, please do not hesitate to contact us!
