This trip combines the thrill of walking with polar bears and the thrill of beluga whale watching.
An Arctic summer experience like no other! Keep an eye out for arctic foxes, red foxes, snow hares, sik-siks, and a variety of migratory and coastal birds.
Radiant white polar bears, Arctic bird life, and singing beluga whales: all this and more awaits you on our adventurous safari through the Canadian tundra.
You will spend your trip far away from the tourist crowds in Churchill and also far away from the questionable methods of the local travel providers.
That's why you fly 60 km north by seaplane directly to Hudson Bay. Here, untouched wilderness lies right on your doorstep. Even at breakfast, the kings of the Arctic are close by – you can watch the polar bears completely unrestricted through the lodge's large windows. In addition to polar bears, you can also admire white arctic foxes, wild caribou, and cute ground squirrels right from your window.
In this privileged and secluded location, you will stay in an exclusive lodge with only 8 rooms. And it remains just as intimate throughout your trip. The maximum of 16 guests at the lodge (the first members of the National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World collection) spend the week among themselves, the polar bears, and their local personal nature guides, who share their knowledge not only on the road but also in the evenings during lectures and presentations on the Arctic ecosystem, landscape, and lifestyle. Tundra-inspired cuisine: A cuisine inspired by the frosty wilderness with a long tradition. Sustainable and regional dishes designed by award-winning cookbook authors.
Go on an expedition and explore the Arctic ecosystem in one of the eco-friendly tundra buggies, or discover the diverse wildlife during a Zodiac tour on the Hudson River. Many extraordinary highlights await you!

Entry and safety information:
The U.S. Department of State provides the following information for travel to Canada.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Face to face with polar bears, the kings of the Arctic: you can observe these wild animals right from the lodge. Every year in summer and fall, many polar bears gather around Hudson Bay and wait for sea ice to form.
- Better than the Beatles: Thesinging white belugas are not called the "canaries of the sea" for nothing. Every Arctic summer, during calving season, the waters are teeming with these friendly sea creatures. Belugas are very curious and interested in humans, which always makes encounters with them a fabulous experience.
- Away from the crowds: Stay overnight at the exclusive Seal River Heritage Lodge with only 8 rooms, one of the oldest members of National Geographic Unique Lodges and located directly on Hudson Bay, which can only be reached by seaplane.
- Adventurous tundra hikes, exciting ATV tours, and educational marine expeditions in small groups of no more than 16 people.
- Safari in the Arctic summer: mild temperatures, colorful contrasts between the white polar bears and the blossoming nature, and a high number of fascinating beluga whales.
- Tundra-inspired cuisine: A cuisine inspired by the frosty wilderness with a long tradition. Sustainable and regional dishes designed by award-winning cookbook authors.
- Diverse wildlife: The Arctic biotope is home to several remarkable animals. In addition to polar bears, black bears, moose, caribou, arctic hares, seals, ground squirrels, and red squirrels alsolive here.
- Beneath the aurora oval: Far from the artificial light sources of the city, you can observe the dreamlike northern lights in unspoiled nature right next to the lodge. This fascinating natural phenomenon on the horizon is particularly visible during the winter months and, with a little luck, also during the Arctic summer.
- Unforgettable photos: A place as beautiful as a movie set —everything here is worth photographing!

itinerary
Arriving and getting acquainted
Not far from Winnipeg Airport, you will first relax from your journey at our selected hotel, The Great Lakeview. There you will meet the rest of your fellow adventurers, whom you will get to know better over a delicious dinner.
Accommodation: Hotel The Great Lakeview (A)
After your first night in Winnipeg, you will fly on to Churchill, the polar bear capital of the Canadian Arctic. Here, you will be met by one of our guides and briefed on the rest of your trip.
The adventurous expedition begins with a flight over the vast Hudson Bay, the second largest bay in the world. With a little luck, you may catch a glimpse of whales, Arctic birdlife, and furry polar bears from high above. The Seal River estuary is a favorite habitat for these Arctic heavyweights, especially in summer.
As soon as you arrive at Seal River Heritage Lodge, your hosts will show you around your home for the next 8 days. Before the first excursions begin, you will receive a detailed introduction to the realm of the polar bears.
After refueling at lunch, explore the Arctic coast for the first time. Don't forget to pack your camera and binoculars, because the coastal region around Sea River Hudson Lodge is a photographer's dream.
Back at the lodge, a hearty dinner featuring local dishes awaits you. If you would like to learn something new after dinner, why not attend one of the informative lectures given by the expedition team? The lectures provide deep insight into the behavior of wild animals and their natural habitat.
Accommodation: Sea River Hudson Lodge (B/L/D)

Right after breakfast, you can either go on an adventurous hike through the tundra or explore the cool polar sea on a Zodiac tour.
Lunch is usually served back at the lodge, unless your tour guides have planned an adrenaline-filled ATV exploration tour further down the coast.
The sea excursions are dependent on the tides. In order to get as many whales as possible in front of the camera lens, we adjust the planned meal times according to the tide.
Adventure makes you hungry, doesn't it? The appetizers served fresh every day will whet your appetite for more – and there is definitely more to come! During dinner, you can fortify yourself with a variety of polar cuisine and recharge your batteries. Afterwards, relax with a glass of wine and get in the mood for the evening's entertainment.
Of course, you decide when to go to bed. Just be prepared for the possibility that your sleep may be disturbed by a nighttime visit from a polar bear. But don't worry! Your room is polar bear-proof and the area around the lodge is monitored throughout the night. But it's also a pleasure to watch the white giants at night under the stars and perhaps even the northern lights.
Accommodation: Sea River Hudson Lodge (B/L/D)
Photo: R. Postma | Churchill-Wild
Fortified by a hearty breakfast at the lodge, you set off on your return flight to Churchill. The bird's-eye view from the airplane window once again offers a wonderful opportunity to capture the panoramic views from the air. Now you can see once more from above what you have experienced up close over the last few days.
In Churchill itself, you will spend the day with one of our tour guides to learn more about the culturally rich port city and its history as a military base. Among other things, you will visit the Itsanitaq Museum, the Park Canada exhibition, and the polar bear prison. The Itsanitaq Museum is dedicated to the indigenous people of the Arctic, the Inuit. The museum houses many cultural treasures of the indigenous people.
All art enthusiasts can look forward to murals created in 2016 as part of the SeaWalls Festival. Use the time before dinner to browse the numerous souvenir shops for a gift for your loved ones.
The flight back south to Winnipeg takes place in the evening. Once you arrive, collect your luggage and drive back to the Grand Hotel.
Accommodation: Hotel The Great Lakeview(B/L/D)
Now that you are rested and well-slept, you can prepare for your flight home.
We reserve the right to adjust the itinerary due to unforeseeable weather events and logistical difficulties that may arise when traveling in remote regions.
Further information
Where you will stay: Your lodge
Your comfortable lodge for the next few days is located on the vast coastline of Hudson Bay. It is situated near the mouth of the Seal River and is the perfect base, remote and far away from crowds and the nearest town, for observing wild polar bears and beluga whales in their natural habitat.
From the secure grounds, you can take unforgettable photos of the wildlife and the Northern Lights. The tower with its viewing platform offers an exclusive view of the action from above and gives you the opportunity to capture your memories in photos without any obstructions.
The accommodation has eight double rooms, each with its own bathroom, which are located far enough away from the common areas that you can retreat and relax when needed.
In front of the lounge's open fire, accompanied by the soothing crackling of the wood, you can relax with a glass of Canadian wine and a book from the lodge library.
SUSTAINABILITY is a top priority here: the lodge is powered by solar energy, graywater recycling, and biodegradable cleaning and hygiene products. Consistent waste management is also one of the Ecolodges' environmental measures.

Heritage Lodge on Hudson Bay

Lodge in winter splendor

Polar bear looking into the cozy Heritage Lodge
Ethical wildlife viewing
The coastline of Hudson Bay is pure, untouched wilderness and the natural habitat of many wild animals such as polar bears, wolves, caribou, black bears, and arctic foxes. The adjacent Arctic bays are home to seals, ringed seals, and even beluga whales during the summer months. The combination of the three surrounding ecosystems—Hudson Bay, taiga, and tundra—creates a true paradise for cold-loving creatures.
An untouched corner of the world where nature is still allowed to be natural.
What is ethical wildlife viewing?
Ethical wildlife viewing involves observing wild animals in their natural habitat without disturbing their instinctive behavior.
In practice, you must therefore observe the following principles:
Getting around on foot:
- The excursions are usually conducted on foot in order to approach the wild animals quietly and unobtrusively. Although this means covering long distances on foot, it is the only way to protect the rich ecosystem with your small footprint.
Keep your distance: Better safe than sorry
- Cute and fluffy are definitely adjectives that can be used to describe polar bears. However, they are the largest land-based predators on earth and can quickly feel threatened. To ensure the safety of these frosty predators and your own, you must maintain a minimum distance of 100 meters. If a curious polar bear does stray into your vicinity, the guides have various deterrent measures at their disposal to safely de-escalate the situation.
Noise reduction:
- Psst! Polar bears are very sensitive to noise and are startled even by the simple creaking of wood.
As soon as a polar bear approaches the lodge, you should remain calm and, for example, turn off the sound of the shutter when taking photos. This way, both you and your wild visitors can enjoy the experience undisturbed.
No drones:
- As tempting as it may sound to film these majestic animals from high above, you should refrain from using them. Flying drones are a visual and acoustic stimulus for polar animals and expose them to avoidable stress.
No perfume:
- Polar bears have highly sensitive noses and can detect smells from miles away. To avoid irritating the bears, you should therefore refrain from wearing perfume.
Do not feed wild animals:
- Feeding wild animals can trigger a dependency on humans and, in extreme cases, can even be fatal.

To ensure this, our customers travel in small groups and are accompanied by experienced nature guides. The daily program is flexible and depends on the current movements of the wild animals, the tides, and the weather.
inventia and our local partners accept no liability for unforeseen events ("force majeure") that affect the sighting of wild animals in their natural environment. Although our travel itineraries and content are the result of many years of experience, we cannot guarantee the extent or diversity of animal sightings.
Weather conditions, population density, behavior patterns, and migrations of other wildlife are some factors that can influence the behavior and activity of animals. Therefore, there is a possibility that the desired wildlife may not be sighted. While this is unlikely, it is not impossible.
Due to the remote location of your destination in the Arctic, flight irregularities are possible due to rapidly changing weather conditions. It is important to remain flexible on this type of expedition trip. We will always arrange alternatives for you.
Be aware that traveling to remote regions of Canada can involve risky activities such as polar bear encounters, which pose risks to your health. These experiences are vastly different from visits to the zoo or Disney World. Please follow the instructions of our local partners and guides at all times. Any deviation from these instructions is at your own risk.
