7 days / 6 nights (or 8 days / 7 nights on selected travel dates) Photo safari to Hudson Bay with intensive polar bear observation and the aurora borealis
+++ 5% Ermäßigung bei Neubuchung bis 31.10.2026 +++
Where the boreal forest meets the wild coast of Hudson Bay, a harsh beauty descends upon the landscape in late autumn, unfolding an impressive natural spectacle. On this photo safari, you will spend 7 (or 8) days where worlds collide in stark contrast, polar bears patrol the borderland between tundra and sea ice, and each day writes a new, visually stunning story of light and shadow.
Your journey to the remote Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge / Seal River Heritage Lodgebegins with a flight from Churchill over Wapusk National Park and historic York Factory. With a little luck, polar bears will already be visible below you, dotting the landscape like brushstrokes. In Nanuk, the true dimension of this untamed wilderness is revealed: polar bears roam along the coast and wolves glide silently out of the woods—while moose carefully keep their distance from hunters.
Every day, you will set off into the wilderness on two guided excursions in specially designed "Tundra Rhinos, " snowmobiles, or traditional sleds. The hikes also promise encounters with Arctic wildlife at eye level. The harsh conditions in the Arctic demand real commitment, but they reward you with moments that fill entire picture books. Your experienced guides read this landscape like a familiar book. They not only understand the behavior of wild animals, but also know how to best capture the landscape and wildlife in photographs.
As evening envelops the lodge, gather in the cozy lounge to view the day's photos by the crackling fireplace, discuss photography techniques, and enjoy tundra-inspired cuisine with a glass of Canadian wine. And if the sky is clear, another spectacle may reveal itself: the Northern Lights, writing their own stories across the starry sky and challenging your camera and creativity once again.

itinerary
Day 1: Start of the trip in Winnipeg with a get-together
After arriving in Winnipeg, enjoy a relaxing stay at the first-class Grand by Lakeview Hotel at Winnipeg Airport. During dinner together, you will not only meet your fellow travelers, but also receive interesting initial information.
Before that, at 5 p.m., you will receive and try on your highly functional winter clothing. This will ensure that you are well equipped for expeditions in the early Arctic winter.
Day 2: Departure for the lodge – The expedition begins!
After your early morning flight, you will first be met at Churchill Airport. There you will transfer to your private small aircraft, which will take you to the remote Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge / Seal River Heritage Lodge.
This exciting one-hour flight takes you over Wapusk National Park and the historic settlement of York Factory, once a bustling hub for the Hudson’s Bay Company. Keep an eye out for wildlife along the way—you might even spot one of the majestic polar bears!
Upon arrival, the lodge team will welcome you, give you a tour of the accommodation, and show you to your room. Before your first excursions, you will receive detailed instructions on how to stay safe in polar bear territory. Then it's time to get your cameras, memory cards, and tripods ready—and capture your first impressive shots!
Days 3 to 5: Photographic encounters with polar bears and the Northern Lights
Every morning, after a hearty breakfast, your guides will present the plan for the day. In order to make the most of the best photo opportunities, the daily schedule can be adjusted flexibly.
Around Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge / Seal River Heritage Lodge, you will spend many hours in untouched terrain far away from civilization – always up close and personal with Arctic wildlife. Thanks to its location right on the coast, the lodge offers perfect conditions for photographing polar bears on snow and ice. On clear nights, you have an excellent chance of capturing the magical northern lights with your camera.
After a convivial aperitif and a delicious tundra-inspired dinner, round off the evening in comfort – whether by the flickering fireplace, sharing your impressions of the day, or enjoying an informative presentation or inspiring slideshow.
When you go to sleep is up to you. In any case, you can fall asleep peacefully without fear of missing anything. The lodge team keeps a close eye on the grounds and the sky for you and will gently wake you up when the Aurora Borealis appears or a nocturnal polar bear visit is imminent!
Day 6: Farewell to the lodge – sightseeing in Churchill
After another hearty breakfast at the lodge, you will board your return flight to Churchill. Be sure to have your camera ready: from a bird's eye view, you can take impressive aerial photos of the Arctic landscape.
Back in Churchill, spend the day on a guided tour of this exciting outpost on the edge of the wilderness. Immerse yourself in Churchill's fascinating history as an important seaport and former military base. Your exploration will take you to attractions such as the Parks Canada exhibit, the Itsanitaq Museum, and the famous Polar Bear Jail. You'll also discover large-scale murals created in 2016 as part of the SeaWalls Festival.
Before the farewell dinner, you will have time to browse through Churchill's numerous shops and find some last-minute souvenirs.
Your flight to Winnipeg departs in the evening. After landing, collect your luggage and proceed directly through the arrivals hall to The Grand Hotel, where you can relax and unwind at the end of your journey.
Day 7: Back home
Today you pack your bags and fly back home. The deep impressions of this journey into the wilderness will stay with you.

Ethical wildlife viewing
The coastline of Hudson Bay is pure, untouched wilderness and the natural habitat of many wild animals such as polar bears, wolves, caribou, black bears, and arctic foxes. The adjacent Arctic bays are home to seals, ringed seals, and even beluga whales during the summer months. The combination of the three surrounding ecosystems—Hudson Bay, taiga, and tundra—creates a true paradise for cold-loving creatures.
An untouched corner of the world where nature is still allowed to be natural.
What is ethical wildlife viewing?
Ethical wildlife viewing involves observing wild animals in their natural habitat without disturbing or influencing their instinctive behavior.
In practice, you must therefore observe the following principles:
Getting around on foot:
- The excursions are usually conducted on foot in order to approach the wild animals quietly and unobtrusively. Although this means covering long distances on foot, it is the only way to protect the rich ecosystem with your small footprint.
Keep your distance: Better safe than sorry
- Cute and fluffy are definitely adjectives that can be used to describe polar bears. However, they are the largest land-based predators on earth and can quickly feel threatened. To ensure the safety of these frosty predators and your own, you must maintain a minimum distance of 100 meters. If a curious polar bear does stray into your vicinity, the guides have various deterrent measures at their disposal to safely de-escalate the situation.
Noise reduction:
- Psst! Polar bears are very sensitive to noise and are startled even by the simple creaking of wood.
As soon as a polar bear approaches the lodge, you should remain calm and, for example, turn off the sound of the shutter when taking photos. This way, both you and your wild visitors can enjoy the experience undisturbed.
No drones:
- As tempting as it may sound to film these majestic animals from high above, you should refrain from using them. Flying drones are a visual and acoustic stimulus for polar animals and expose them to avoidable stress.
No perfume:
- Polar bears have highly sensitive noses and can detect smells from miles away. To avoid irritating the bears, you should therefore refrain from wearing perfume.
Do not feed wild animals:
- Feeding wild animals can trigger a dependency on humans and, in extreme cases, can even be fatal.

You travel to the untouched Arctic regions of Canada to observe the majestic wildlife. Our mission is to offer you safaris that have minimal impact on the environment and wildlife. The safety of travelers and the integrity of the animals are our top priorities.
To ensure this, our customers travel in small groups and are accompanied by experienced nature guides. The daily program is flexible and depends on the current movements of the wild animals, the tides, and the weather.
inventia and our local partner accept no liability for unforeseen events ("force majeure") that affect the sighting of wild animals in their natural environment. Although our travel itineraries and content are the result of many years of experience, we cannot guarantee the extent or diversity of animal sightings.
Weather conditions, population density, behavior patterns, and migrations of other wildlife are some factors that can influence the behavior and activity of animals. Therefore, there is a possibility that the desired wildlife may not be sighted. While this is unlikely, it is not impossible.
Due to the remote location of your destination in the Arctic, flight irregularities are possible due to rapidly changing weather conditions. It is important to remain flexible on this type of expedition trip. We will always arrange alternatives for you.
Be aware that traveling to remote regions of Canada can involve risky activities such as polar bear encounters, which pose risks to your health. These experiences are vastly different from visits to the zoo or Disney World. Please follow the instructions of our local partners and guides at all times. Any deviation from these instructions is at your own risk.
Similarly, the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon. We cannot guarantee that they will appear.
