[Antarctica Wiki] When is the best time to travel to Antarctica?

Sep. 17, 2024General, Antarctica & South Pole, Wiki Antarctica

Greetings, polar pioneers,

Antarctica is the coldest continent on Earth.

But don't worry: when you travel to Antarctica, it's summer in the southern hemisphere.

Between November and March, temperatures on the Antarctic coast are pleasant for humans.

While the average annual temperature is around -55°C (at an altitude of 3000 meters inland), during our winter half-year (= Antarctic summer) you can enjoy temperatures around freezing point and even slightly higher in coastal areas.

The low humidity also makes the temperatures feel higher than they actually are.

While the sun hardly shines during the Antarctic winter (March to September), it can be seen in the sky for up to 24 hours during your Antarctic trip in the Antarctic summer (between October and March), depending on the latitude.

Nature rewards you with fascinating plays of color and bathes the evenings in a pink-orange twilight. An Eldorado for photographers.

Another natural spectacle awaits you: in the southern hemisphere, the sun moves to the left—unlike in the northern hemisphere. Of course, it's not the sun that moves, but the earth that rotates :-). But that's how it appears to us.

Expeditions and cruises to Antarctica are only available during the Antarctic summer (i.e., our winter) between October and March. During this period, approved ships with ice classes can easily break through the ice along the route.

Not sure when the ideal time for you to travel to Antarctica would be? Then let's talk about it.
