Sleeping under the Northern Lights

Saariselkä, Lapland, Finland

250 km north of the Arctic Circle

Who likes standing in the bitter cold of polar nights while waiting for the Northern Lights?

From your glass igloo, you can watch the bright green glow of the northern lights dance across the clear sky while you snuggle up in your blanket.

The Arctic Igloo Village is located 250 km north of the Arctic Circle and is one of the best places in the world to observe the Northern Lights. It is located on the edge of the remote Finnish wilderness, on the Arctic Ocean Road, just a stone's throw from one of Finland's largest national parks, Urho Kekkonen National Park.

During the day, explore the area. There are a huge number of activities to choose from (see below).

The area has been inhabited by the Sami people for over a hundred years and is one of the most untouched areas in the world. You can drink the pure water directly from the mountain rivers and lakes, and the fresh air will do you good.

The Northern Lights are visible from the last week of August to the last week of April, but they are dependent on the weather, as are the activities.

The Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort was designed with a love for the solitude and authenticity of Lapland. Nature and Lapland are ever-present. The igloos and cabins are located in the middle of nature, yet all restaurants and other services are within walking distance. And since you are in Finland, every accommodation naturally has a sauna and a fireplace. In addition, all accommodations are equipped with a northern lights alarm and 4G Wi-Fi. Smoking is prohibited. You can buy small snacks and drinks at the reception.

The cold, fresh spring water is so clean that you can even drink it.

AURORA-PIRSCH
Seeing the Northern Lights cast their magical glow across the Arctic sky is an impressive sight, but what makes it truly unforgettable is the special journey to this natural phenomenon. Imagine a nighttime adventure in the wilderness, on a reindeer or horse-drawn sleigh, with panoramic views from the sleigh of the snow tank, racing on a snowmobile, or perhaps gliding gracefully on skis.

  • Snowmobile drivers must be over 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.
  • Children must be at least 130 cm tall to ride on a snowmobile.
  • Children under 130 cm tall can sit in a sled trailer pulled by a snowmobile.
  • We recommend tours of max. 2 hours for children.
  • Deductible for damage to snowmobile: €1,500
  • You will receive instruction on how to drive the snowmobile.

Aurora stalking by snowmobile, 3 hours, including hot drink

You will be picked up from Kakslauttanen, taken to the activity site at the edge of the forest, and provided with thermal clothing and instructions. The snowmobile is designed for two people: one drives and the other sits in the back. There is also the option of having your own snowmobile, and if you don't want to drive yourself, you can also ride on the back of a sled. The lights of the snowmobiles illuminate the snow as you drive into the Arctic wilderness with a rush of adrenaline. During a break, we enjoy hot berry juice and, if we are lucky, the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights, appear in the sky. On the way, there is a break for photo shoots and a driver change.

Child €131
Adults, own sled €270

If you are unsure whether you can ride a snowmobile at night, or if you are traveling with small children or elderly guests. No problem! You are welcome to take part in a snowmobile activity where trained guides will take you through the Arctic forest. During a break, you can enjoy hot berry juice. With a little luck, the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights, will appear in the sky and you will have the opportunity to take some photos.

Five minutes' drive from Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, deep in the shadow of the forest, lies Santa Claus's realm. After centuries, Santa Claus has finally opened his home to the public. The red, idyllic cabin awaits its guests at the end of a pretty wooden footbridge on the opposite bank of a narrow river. Santa Claus is available by appointment, so it is worth booking a visit in advance.
Santa Claus's festive house is an impressive sight. Finland's largest log cabin can accommodate over 250 guests for dining, wedding celebrations, or concerts. For companies, the banquet hall offers an excellent setting for various customer events. The sloping floor allows for spectacular product launches, whether it's a perfume, a sports car, or something else.
