On the Road, Where the World's Largest Rainforest Breathes

Amazon Dolphin, among others

Max. 22 passengers

5 days (4 nights)

From/To Alter do Chão
5-day river cruise from/to Alter do Chão in the Amazon Rainforest of Pará | max. 22 passengers | scheduled departures year-round
White sandy beaches in the middle of the rainforest and water in three colors: Over the course of five days, you’ll cruise around Alter do Chão through the green waters of the Tapajós, the white waters of the Amazon, and the black waters of the Arapiuns. With a little luck, pink river dolphins will accompany your boat, and on the last evening, the crew will host a festive dinner on a quiet river beach.
You’ll travel in a small group on a traditional, all-wood, air-conditioned Amazon boat with a permanent crew; depending on the group size, it can accommodate up to 22 passengers. Because the boats are so small, they can reach quiet side channels, sandbars, and riverside villages that are inaccessible to larger vessels, and they deliberately head for the quietest spots around Alter do Chão.
During the day, you’ll hike through the primary forest of the Tapajós National Forest to a Samaúma kapok tree that’s about 600 years old, swim at freshwater beaches, and glide by canoe through flooded forests. In the riverside and indigenous communities, the residents offer a glimpse into their way of life: from cassava flour production at the São Marcos flour mill to the turtle breeding station run by the Coroca community. With a little luck, you might spot river dolphins, sloths, or monkeys. The Amazon is not a traditional destination for wildlife viewing; its appeal lies in the vastness of the landscape and the encounters with the people who live here.
The trip departs on set dates throughout the year, with some departures coinciding with special occasions such as Carnival, Easter, or New Year’s Eve. We’d be happy to extend your trip—with a few days in the charming village of Alter do Chão, a side trip to the port city of Santarém, or a stay at a lodge deeper in the rainforest. Contact us, and we’ll tailor your Amazon River cruise to your individual preferences.

route

itinerary
Day 1 | Arrival in Alter do Chão
The team will meet you at the Santarém airport. If you’re already staying at a hotel in Santarém, you’ll be picked up around noon. You’ll then travel by land to Alter do Chão, one of the most charming villages on the Amazon, with restaurants right on the water, a central square, and small shops full of indigenous handicrafts. Between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., you’ll board the ship, settle into your cabin, and attend the orientation, including safety instructions.
Then comes the “baptism”: the first swim in the Tapajós. You glide into the green, warm freshwater and have time to swim before the journey deeper into the rainforest begins.
Day 2 | In the Tapajós National Forest
After breakfast, you’ll disembark in the Tapajós National Forest (FLONA), one of the region’s largest protected areas, covering over 500,000 hectares. Just outside the Jamaraquá community, your hike through the primary forest begins, taking you past dense vegetation to the massive samaúma—the kapok tree—which experts estimate to be around 600 years old and call the “Grandmother of the Forest.” The pace will be adjusted to suit the group, and the route can be shortened if necessary.
To cool off, take a dip in one of the region’s most beautiful streams before returning on board for lunch. The afternoon is free for swimming in the Tapajós. In the evening, relax on deck under the starry sky and listen to the sounds of the rainforest.
Day 3 | Jari Canal, Arapiuns, and the Coroca Community
You’ll wake up on the Jari Canal, a tributary of the mighty Amazon, and greet the dawn with the sound of birdsong. The journey continues to the Arapiuns River with its dark waters, lush forests, and white-sand beaches. With a little luck, river dolphins will surface alongside the boat along the way. In the late afternoon, you’ll visit the Coroca community, with its lake, Amazonian turtle breeding center, and craft shop, while the guides tell you about sustainable tourism in the region.
In the evening, a special dinner on board celebrates the day, featuring the authentic flavors of Pará cuisine.
Day 4 | São Marcos and Piracaia Communities
After breakfast, you’ll be guests at the São Marcos community. At the “casa de farinha,” a traditional flour mill, the residents will show you how cassava is turned into the staple food of the forest peoples. Afterward, you can take it easy on the beach: the crew will prepare caipirinhas made from local fruits, serve traditional snacks, or set up a hammock in the shade.
To cap off the last night on board, there will be a special beach dinner featuring the traditional piracaia—fish grilled over charcoal in the style of Pará cuisine.
Day 5 | The Last Plunge into the Water
On your last morning, you’ll wake up to the green waters of the Tapajós and treat yourself to a farewell swim before the boat returns to Alter do Chão. You’ll disembark by noon. The team will take you to Santarém Airport or to another location of your choice in the region.
activities
Hikes in the primary forest (included)

From the boat, you’ll disembark and follow your guides along narrow trails into the Amazon’s primary forest. In the Tapajós National Forest, a protected area spanning over 500,000 hectares, the trail leads to the massive samaúma tree—the kapok tree—which experts estimate to be around 600 years old and which the region calls the “Grandmother of the Forest.” Along the way, the guides explain which plants are used for traditional forest medicine. The route is tailored to the group’s pace and takes between one and five hours; at the end, a refreshing swim in a clear forest stream often awaits.
Swimming at freshwater beaches and in flooded forests (included)

The Amazon in Pará is a realm of fresh water. On the light-colored sandy beaches of the Tapajós, whose green waters shimmer in the warm sunlight, you can go for a swim, float along with the current, or relax on the shore. On other days, the boat glides into the flooded forests—known here as igapós —where the treetops are reflected in the still water, and into shady forest streams, the igarapés, whose cool water is a welcome relief under the equatorial sun.
Encounters with riverside and indigenous communities (included)

Communities of fifty to four hundred people live along the riverbanks and welcome you to their villages. In communities such as Coroca or São Marcos, you’ll sit down with the residents, hear about life along the river, and learn how responsible tourism contributes to the preservation of the forest. The tour operator works in direct partnership with these guardians of the forest, whose knowledge of the forest, water, and tradition forms the core of this journey.
Canoeing and wildlife viewing (if you're lucky) (included)

In canoes, you glide silently through narrow waterways, reaching places the large boat can’t go, and in the early morning, a chorus of birds fills the air above the water. The Amazon isn’t a classic destination for wildlife viewing, but with a little luck, pink river dolphins or gray tucuxis might surface beside your canoe, a sloth might hang motionless in the branches, or monkeys might dart through the treetops. What you see is a gift of the moment—not a promise.
Culture and Handicrafts of the Forest Peoples (inclusive)

In the São Marcos community, a traditional flour mill—the casa de farinha—demonstrates how cassava is turned into the staple food of the forest peoples. In Coroca, you’ll visit a breeding center where Amazonian turtles are protected in collaboration with the environmental agency IBAMA. In the craft shops, you’ll find original items made from the straw of the Tucumã palm, wood carvings, and jewelry made from seeds and latex. Be sure to have some cash on hand for shopping, as credit cards are not accepted in the villages.
Pará cuisine and piracaia on the beach (included)

The cuisine of Pará draws its inspiration from the river and the forest. On board, the crew serves fresh fish and regional dishes, along with juices and ice cream made from local fruits, and caipirinhas on the open deck. A highlight of the final night is the piracaia—fish grilled over charcoal—which you’ll enjoy on a quiet beach while the crew passes around snacks and sets up a hammock in the shade. On the New Year’s Eve departure, this turns into a New Year’s Eve dinner on the beach under the stars.
Sport Fishing for Piranhas (optional)

If you’d like, you can cast a line for piranhas with the guides, just like the locals do, and always with bated breath the moment the line tugs. Sport fishing is available for an additional fee upon request and subject to availability; it takes place only in designated areas and follows the catch-and-release principle, so every fish is returned to the river.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get there?
Your starting point is Santarém in the Brazilian state of Pará. International flights reach Santarém via Brazilian hubs such as São Paulo, Brasília, or Belém; you’ll take a domestic flight to Santarém Airport (IATA code STM). From the airport, the tour operator’s team will drive you to the nearby river village of Alter do Chão, where your boat will be waiting. Boarding takes place on the day of arrival between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.; on the day of departure, you’ll dock again by 12:00 p.m. Ground transfers between the airport, hotels in the region, and the boat are included in the tour price. Upon request, we can handle your flight arrangements for you.
What are the entry requirements for Brazil?
German citizens must have a valid passport. You can find the latest travel and safety advisories from the Federal Foreign Office for Brazil. Regulations may vary for other nationalities. Please contact us.
When is the trip taking place?
The trip departs on approximately 15 set dates throughout the year, each lasting 5 days / 4 nights from and to Alter do Chão. Some departures coincide with special occasions such as Carnival, Easter, or New Year’s Eve. You can find all current dates and prices under “Departures” at the bottom of this page.
What makes the New Year's Eve event special?
The highlight is the night of December 31, featuring a New Year’s Eve celebration and dinner on a beach in the region, under the stars. There is deliberately no set day-by-day itinerary for this trip: The crew plans the route to take in the quieter spots around the festivities in Alter do Chão, avoiding large crowds. The regular five-day itinerary serves as a guide.
Will I see pink river dolphins and other animals?
Let’s be honest: The tour operator explicitly points out that the Amazon is not a traditional wildlife-viewing destination. Sightings are never guaranteed. With a little luck, you might spot pink river dolphins and gray tucuxis on the Arapiuns River or the Jari Canal, as well as sloths, monkeys, and numerous birds—such as during the morning chorus of birdsong. However, the focus of this trip is on the three river landscapes, the freshwater beaches, the primary forest, and encounters with the riverside communities.
Is there internet and cell service on board?
According to the onboard brochure, the boats are equipped with Starlink Wi-Fi. At the same time, the provider notes that neither cell service nor internet will be available for most of the trip, with reception limited mainly to the beginning and end of the journey, near the village. So be prepared for a deliberate digital detox over long stretches, far from the grid, in the heart of the world’s largest tropical rainforest.
Who is this trip for?
Hikes through the primary forest can be adapted to the group's pace and last between one and five hours. This trip takes you to remote areas without access to advanced medical facilities. People with life-threatening medical conditions or who require daily medical treatment cannot participate.
What health issues should I be aware of?
The route follows the equator; the sun is very intense, so sunscreen, a hat, and light clothing are essential. For the forest trails, we recommend long pants and sneakers, as well as swimwear, insect repellent, a flashlight, and a lightweight raincoat. There are no shopping opportunities during the trip, so please bring all necessary medications with you; if you have an allergy to insect stings, please bring doctor-prescribed antihistamines and inform the tour group.
Which meals and beverages are included in the price?
You’ll be well taken care of on board. The tour price includes regional cuisine from Pará as per the daily itinerary, featuring breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, plus a festive beach dinner on the last evening. Meals include fish and regional dishes, including the traditional piracaia—fish grilled over charcoal. Beverages included on board are mineral water, juices, soft drinks, beer, and caipirinhas. The kitchen will gladly accommodate dietary requests and food intolerances in the menu upon advance notice.
Is this trip suitable for solo travelers and families?
Solo travelers book a single cabin for their exclusive use. Families are also well taken care of: There is a special children’s rate for children up to age 11, and the bunk-bed and connecting cabins are particularly well-suited for families with children. According to the general terms and conditions of travel, the minimum age is 6 years. Children sharing a cabin with only one adult pay the same price as the adult. Please contact us—we’ll find the right cabin solution for you.
